JoAnn Canales is the dean of the College of Graduate Studies and professor in the College of Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi holds degrees from the University of Houston, Laredo State University, and The University of Texas at Austin.  She has over 30 years of teaching experience in public schools and three public institutions of higher education in Texas and Colorado.

During her 18-year tenure at A&M-CC, she has served in numerous roles both at the college and university levels. Her administrative portfolio includes establishing a nationally recognized field-based undergraduate teacher preparation program, developing a faculty development center, and initiating a college of graduate studies. Her portfolio academic portfolio includes strategic plan development, program evaluation, and collaboration in a variety of settings including school districts, state departments, state/national organizations, banking institutions, and international institutions of higher education.  Her areas of expertise include English-language proficiency assessment, teacher preparation, and issues of access and success in higher education.

Canales was an American Council of Education Fellow (2002-2003), recipient of the TAMU-C C Excellence in Teaching Award (2005-2006), and has served as a principal or co-investigator on federal grants.

She serves as a member of GRE® Board as well as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend, and the Gulf Coast Credit Union of Corpus Christi.  She also chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the GRE® Board and the Diversity Inclusion Advisory Committee of the Council of Graduate Schools.
